IMS/VoNR

VoNR

Voice over New Radio: IMS-based voice service delivered natively over the 5G NR standalone network, providing HD voice with lower latency than VoLTE.

VoNR is voice carried natively over 5G standalone radio, with IMS providing the call control exactly as it does for VoLTE — same SIP, same CSCFs, same TAS. The difference is purely the access leg: the call's media rides a dedicated QoS flow (5QI 1, GBR) over NR instead of an LTE bearer. When the whole chain is in place, you get HD voice (the same EVS codec family VoLTE uses) and the device stays on 5G for the call rather than dropping to 4G. NR's shorter slots can trim voice latency versus VoLTE, but the real-world gain is configuration-dependent and often modest.

The catch is coverage and rollout. VoNR only works where the SA network, the radio QoS support, and IMS-over-NR are all deployed, and that footprint lagged behind 5G data for years. Where VoNR isn't available in the serving area, the network uses EPS Fallback to move the call to LTE/VoLTE instead. So in many live networks "5G voice" in 2024–2026 has often meant EPS Fallback in practice, with true VoNR switched on market by market as coverage matured.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my call drop from 5G to 4G when I dialled?
That's almost certainly EPS Fallback, not a fault. If the serving cell doesn't support VoNR (true voice over 5G NR), the network redirects or hands the device to LTE the moment a voice call is set up, so the call runs as VoLTE. Data may have been on 5G a second earlier; voice triggered the move. As an operator turns up VoNR coverage in an area, that fallback stops happening there.
