VoLTE
Voice over LTE: IMS-based voice service delivered over the LTE data network, replacing legacy circuit-switched calls with high-quality VoIP using dedicated QCI 1 bearers.
VoLTE carries your voice call as packets over the LTE data network, with the IMS handling all the call-control intelligence (registration, setup, supplementary services) that a circuit-switched network used to provide. The voice itself rides on a dedicated QCI 1 bearer with guaranteed bit rate, which is what keeps the call clean even when the cell is busy — your speech packets aren't fighting someone's video download for airtime.
Two practical payoffs are worth knowing. The audio quality is genuinely better, because VoLTE uses wideband codecs (AMR-WB, and EVS in newer deployments) instead of the narrowband audio of legacy 2G/3G calls. And call setup is much faster, since there's no circuit to establish. The catch is that VoLTE needs end-to-end support — handset, RAN, IMS core, and the roaming partner all have to play along — which is why CSFB lingered for years as the fallback. When a VoLTE call has to leave LTE coverage mid-conversation, SRVCC is the mechanism that hands it down to a circuit-switched network without dropping it.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does VoLTE sound clearer than a normal call?
- Two reasons. VoLTE uses wideband (HD Voice) codecs like AMR-WB or EVS that capture a much broader range of audio frequencies than the narrowband codecs of old 2G/3G calls, so voices sound fuller and more natural. It also avoids the heavy compression and transcoding of legacy circuit-switched paths. The result is noticeably better clarity, assuming both ends are on VoLTE and no transcoding happens in between.
- Does VoLTE use my data allowance?
- Technically the voice travels as IP packets over the LTE network, but operators almost always bill VoLTE as voice minutes, not data, and the traffic runs on a separate dedicated bearer that is usually excluded from your data bucket. So in practice a VoLTE call does not eat into your data allowance — though policies vary by operator and plan.
