Cell-Free MIMO

A distributed MIMO architecture where many geographically dispersed access points coherently serve all users without cell boundaries, eliminating inter-cell interference.

Cell-free MIMO asks a provocative question: what if there were no cells at all? Instead of one tower serving a defined coverage area, you scatter a large number of simple access points across the territory, all connected back to central processing, and have them jointly serve every user. From the user's point of view there's no cell boundary to cross, so there's no cell edge — and the cell edge is where conventional networks deliver their worst performance.

The mechanism is coherent cooperation. Several nearby access points transmit to the same user in a coordinated way, so signals that would be interference in a traditional layout instead combine usefully. That, in theory, kills inter-cell interference, which is the dominant limit in dense deployments. The hard part is the cost of coordination: it demands tight synchronisation, accurate channel knowledge at every access point, and serious fronthaul capacity to move data and channel state back to the central processor. It's a leading academic candidate for 6G and a natural fit with the distributed access-point world of O-RAN, but the scalability and fronthaul challenges are exactly why it's still mostly research rather than rollout.
