Massive MIMO

An antenna technology using a very large number of antenna elements (typically 32-64+) at the base station to serve multiple users simultaneously with narrow, high-gain beams.

Massive MIMO is mid-band 5G's headline capacity trick. Putting 32, 64, or even 128 antenna elements on a panel lets the base station form narrow beams in software and — the important part — point a separate beam at each user on the same time and frequency. That's MU-MIMO: the array serves many subscribers simultaneously, multiplying cell capacity without needing more spectrum.

The phrase people misread is "64T64R." That describes transceiver chains, not 64 data streams to one phone. A handset typically receives 2 or 4 layers; the value of the big array is spatial separation across many users plus beamforming gain that lifts each one's SINR. It leans on good channel knowledge — CSI feedback in FDD, or uplink SRS sounding exploiting channel reciprocity in TDD, which is one reason massive MIMO and TDD pair so naturally. The practical ceiling isn't the antenna count; it's how well the channels of co-scheduled users decorrelate, since users that look alike spatially interfere with each other.

Frequently asked questions

Does massive MIMO mean my phone gets 64 data streams?
No. A "64T64R" radio has 64 transceiver chains, but a single phone usually receives only 2 or 4 spatial layers. The large array mainly buys two things: beamforming gain that strengthens each link, and the ability to point separate beams at many different users on the same resources at once (MU-MIMO). The capacity gain comes from serving many users in parallel, not from a huge stream count to one device.
