6G

The sixth generation of mobile networks expected around 2030, targeting sub-THz spectrum, AI-native architecture, digital twins, sensing-communication convergence, and sub-0.1 ms latency.

6G is the next generation in the roughly ten-year cadence the industry has followed since the analogue days, with commercial deployment broadly expected around 2030. It's still in the research and pre-standardisation phase — ITU-R has set the high-level vision (IMT-2030) and 3GPP study work is ramping — so anyone quoting hard 6G specs today is describing targets and candidates, not frozen standards.

The themes that keep recurring are worth knowing because they shape current research: sub-terahertz spectrum for enormous bandwidth, AI baked into the architecture rather than added on, integrated sensing so the network can perceive its surroundings, digital twins for operations, and latency targets pushing below 0.1 ms. Plenty of it may not survive contact with reality — every generation over-promises in this phase — but the direction of travel is fairly consistent across the bodies working on it.

Frequently asked questions

When will 6G actually be available?
Commercial 6G is broadly targeted for around 2030, following the roughly ten-year gap between generations. As of now it is in research and early standardisation: ITU-R has published the IMT-2030 vision and 3GPP is beginning study work, but no 6G standard is finalised. Expect specifications to firm up over the second half of this decade before real deployments begin.
What's the difference between 5G and 6G?
5G focused on three service pillars — fast broadband, ultra-reliable low latency, and massive IoT. 6G aims to go further with much higher frequencies (sub-terahertz), AI built into the network rather than bolted on, the ability to sense the physical environment, and aspirational latency targets below 0.1 ms. The biggest conceptual shift is treating the network as something that perceives and reasons, not just one that moves bits.
