About 3GPP specifications
3GPP organises its technical specifications (TS) and reports (TR) into numbered series. The 21–29 series cover system architecture, services, NAS, and core network APIs; the 33 series covers security; the 36 series is LTE / E-UTRA; the 37 series handles multi-RAT including EN-DC; and the 38 series is 5G NR. Each release builds on the previous one, so spec numbers are stable over time — only the version (Rel-15, Rel-16, Rel-17…) changes.
For day-to-day reference, most engineers only touch 20 or so documents: 23.501 / 23.502 for the 5G core, 24.501 for NAS, 38.211 / 38.212 / 38.213 / 38.214 for the NR PHY, 38.331 for RRC, 38.413 for NGAP and 33.501 for security. This helper covers those plus a broader long tail.

How to find a spec with the helper
- Type what you know. Enter a spec number, part of a title, or a keyword.
- Filter the list. The list narrows as you type to the matching TS/TR entries.
- Open the spec. Click the result to follow the direct link to the document.
Frequently asked questions
- How are 3GPP specification numbers structured?
- A 3GPP document is identified by a series and a number, like TS 38.331 or TR 38.913. TS marks a Technical Specification (normative) and TR a Technical Report (informative). The series — the first two digits — groups specs by area; the 38-series covers 5G NR, the 36-series LTE, the 23-series stage-2 architecture, and so on. Knowing the series alone often tells you roughly what a spec is about.
- What is the difference between a TS and a TR?
- A TS is a Technical Specification — it defines requirements you have to meet, so it is the normative reference. A TR is a Technical Report — background, studies and feasibility work that informs the specs but isn't binding. When you need the actual rule you cite the TS; the TR explains the thinking behind it.
- Does it link to the actual documents?
- Yes — each result carries a direct link out to the specification so you can jump from the number and title to the document itself rather than searching the 3GPP portal by hand.
