Drive Testing

Walk Test

Indoor RF measurement campaign walking through buildings to assess indoor coverage, signal quality, and handover behavior.

A walk test is drive testing's indoor sibling — same idea, on foot, through buildings where a car can't go and where coverage problems are often worst. You carry a phone or small kit running a measurement tool and walk floors, stairwells, lobbies and lift cores, logging RSRP, SINR, quality and call behaviour against a building floor plan rather than a GPS map (GPS is usually useless indoors, so you mark your position by tapping on the plan as you go).

The reason it gets its own name and method is that indoor RF is a different animal: thick walls, multi-floor leakage from outdoor cells, and in-building systems like DAS or small cells that need their own validation. Common targets are verifying a newly installed DAS, finding dead spots in a stairwell, or checking that handovers between an indoor system and the surrounding macro layer happen cleanly instead of dropping the call at the door. It's slow and manual, but for venues that matter — airports, stadiums, hospitals, big offices — there's often no substitute for physically walking the space.
