SNPN

Standalone Non-Public Network: a private 5G network operating independently with its own NID and credentials, providing full enterprise control.

SNPN is the fully self-contained flavour of private 5G. The enterprise runs its own standalone network — its own NID (network identifier), its own subscriber credentials, its own core — with no dependency on a public mobile operator to function. Devices that aren't provisioned for it simply can't use it, which is exactly the point: an SNPN gives a factory, port, or mine complete control over its own connectivity, data, and security perimeter.

That independence is the headline feature and also the cost. You get isolation (traffic and credentials stay on-site, which suits strict security and data-sovereignty requirements) and you're not at the mercy of public-network performance or coverage. But you also own the whole thing — spectrum, the RAN, the core, and the operations skills to keep it running. That's why SNPN tends to fit large industrial sites with real in-house (or integrator-supplied) capability, while smaller deployments often lean toward the operator-assisted PNI-NPN model instead. Recent 3GPP releases also added features like onboarding and credentials-holder support to make SNPNs less of an all-or-nothing island.

SNPN vs PNI-NPN — which one do I want?
It depends on how much you want to own. SNPN is fully standalone: your own core, credentials, and NID, independent of any operator — maximum control and isolation, but you run everything. PNI-NPN is built with a public operator's help, sharing some infrastructure (often via slicing) while giving you dedicated resources — easier to deploy and operate, but with a dependency on the MNO. Heavy industrial sites with strict isolation needs lean SNPN; enterprises wanting operator support lean PNI-NPN.
