NOC

Network Operations Center: centralized facility for 24/7 network monitoring, alarm management, fault resolution, and SLA compliance tracking.

The NOC is the room (often several rooms, often distributed) where the network is watched around the clock. Alarms from across the network land here on the big screens; operators triage them, work the faults, escalate to field teams or higher tiers when needed, and track everything against the SLAs the business has committed to. The job is part firefighting and part vigilance — catching a degradation before customers do is as much the point as fixing outright outages.

A useful distinction you'll hear is NOC versus SOC: the NOC owns network performance and availability (is it up, is it healthy, are we hitting our SLAs), while the SOC owns security (is someone attacking us). They overlap but aren't the same desk. The NOC's effectiveness tends to be measured by exactly the operational KPIs it's chasing — how fast it detects, acknowledges and resolves faults, with MTTR being the headline. Modern NOCs lean heavily on correlation and automation because raw alarm volume is brutal: without filtering and root-cause correlation, a single fault can throw hundreds of downstream alarms and bury the one that matters.
