CA

Carrier Aggregation: a technique that combines multiple component carriers (up to 16 in NR) to increase peak data rates and overall bandwidth for a single UE.

Carrier aggregation bonds several component carriers together so one UE can use more spectrum than any single carrier provides — up to 16 carriers in NR, though real devices use far fewer. There's a Primary Cell (PCell) that anchors the connection and carries the critical signalling, plus Secondary Cells (SCells) that the network activates and deactivates on demand to add bandwidth when a device needs it.

The practical value is twofold: higher peak rates, and the ability to stitch together spectrum an operator holds in scattered chunks. Aggregating a low band with a mid band is especially common — the low band provides coverage and the wide mid band provides capacity, combined on one connection. NR supports intra-band (contiguous or not) and inter-band combinations, and it can even aggregate FR1 with FR2. SCells are activated via MAC Control Elements rather than slower RRC, so the network can bring capacity online quickly. Don't confuse CA with dual connectivity: CA is one scheduler across carriers within a single gNB, while DC involves two separate nodes with their own schedulers.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between carrier aggregation and dual connectivity?
Carrier aggregation combines multiple carriers under a single base station with one MAC scheduler coordinating them. Dual connectivity links the UE to two separate nodes — for example an LTE master and an NR secondary in EN-DC — each with its own scheduler, with traffic split higher up at PDCP. CA is tighter and lower-latency to coordinate; DC is what you use to combine resources across two different base stations or technologies.
