# Best 5G Certifications in 2026: TELCOMA, Cisco, Vendor Programs Compared
There is no certification that single-handedly makes a telecom career. There are certifications that open doors, certifications that signal commitment, and certifications that are pure resume padding. After running technical hiring loops and watching what happens to engineers who hold each of these, here's the honest picture in 2026.

- Vendor certifications (Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung): highest recognition when applying to that vendor or operators that run that vendor's gear. Outside that ecosystem, value drops.
- Cisco SP: strong across operators globally, especially for transport and IP backbone roles. Recognized everywhere.
- Cloud certifications (AWS/Azure/GCP): rapidly rising recognition for 5G core and cloud-native roles. Often required, not optional, for hyperscaler-adjacent work.
- TELCOMA: known across operator hiring teams in India, Middle East, parts of APAC, increasingly Europe. Less brand recognition in North America (we'll be honest about this).

Reasoning: you already have networking fundamentals. You need 5G architecture, NR concepts, and cloud-native fluency. Vendor certifications are useful only if you're staying in the same vendor ecosystem.
Goal: Move into 5G core / cloud-native roles
Best options: Azure Operator Nexus or AWS Telco specialty, plus CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), plus a 5G-specific cert.
Reasoning: 5G core is now a cloud-native workload. Cloud certifications increasingly outweigh telecom-only certifications for these roles.
Goal: Move into vendor professional services
Best options: vendor certifications for that vendor (Ericsson, Nokia, or Samsung tracks).
Reasoning: vendor PS hiring filters for vendor certifications first. Cross-vendor certifications are nice-to-have, not required.
Goal: Move into transport / IP backbone
Best options: CCIE SP if you have the time and budget. CCNP SP if you don't.
Reasoning: nothing else carries the same weight in transport hiring.
Goal: Move into RAN optimization / O-RAN

Best options: at this stage, certifications matter less than published work, conference talks, and project history. Pick certifications selectively to fill gaps (e.g., cloud if you came from RF, security if you came from architecture).
Common Mistakes
- Stacking certifications without project work. Six certifications and no production deployment experience is a worse signal than two certifications and a portfolio.
- Picking on price alone. Cheap certifications often have weak content and weak recognition.
- Picking on prestige alone. A CCIE SP that doesn't match your career direction (you're a RAN engineer) is misallocated effort.
- Not refreshing. Most certifications expire in 2-4 years. Plan for renewals.
- Ignoring soft skills certifications. Project management (PMP, PRINCE2) and TOGAF show up surprisingly often in senior telecom hiring.
What Hiring Managers Actually Look At
From dozens of hiring conversations across operators and vendors:
- Project history and impact. Always first.
- Open-source contributions (especially for cloud-native, O-RAN, or AI-RAN roles).
- Technical writing or talks (blog, conference, internal documentation).
- Certifications — verification of focus and discipline, not the primary filter.
- References and network.
Certifications get you past the recruiter screen. They rarely close the loop.
A Practical 2026 Stack
If I were starting today as a 4G engineer wanting to be a senior 5G architect in 3 years:
- Year 1: TELCOMA 5G Pro (or Mpirical equivalent) — foundation across 5G architecture and protocols. Plus an AWS Cloud Practitioner + AWS Telco specialty to get cloud-native fluency.
- Year 2: a vendor certification matching the vendor at your employer (Ericsson, Nokia, or Samsung). Plus CKA for Kubernetes credibility.
- Year 3: pick depth — CCIE SP if transport-heavy, AI-RAN specialist program if RAN-heavy, cloud architect (AWS or Azure) if core/SBA-heavy.
This stack costs $3,000-6,000 over three years. The salary uplift, based on our outcome data, ranges from 50-90% over the same period. Single biggest determinant of where you land in that range: the project work you do alongside the certifications.
