Why voice over LTE needs IMS

Card 1 of 425%

The Voice Challenge in LTE

LTE is a pure packet-switched network — there is no circuit-switched domain for traditional voice calls. This was a deliberate design choice for efficiency, but it created a problem: how do you make a voice call? The answer is VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which uses the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) to handle call signaling, session management, and QoS for voice over the all-IP network.
