Tracking Area Update (TAU)

Card 1 of 425%

How the Network Knows Where You Are

When your phone is idle (not actively sending data), the network needs to know your approximate location so it can page you for incoming calls or messages. The network is divided into Tracking Areas (TAs), and when your UE moves into a new TA, it performs a Tracking Area Update (TAU) to inform the MME. This lets the network page you in the right area without paging the entire network.
