As operators evolve toward 5G stand-alone (SA) deployments and gradually retire LTE infrastructure, the IoT ecosystem faced a gap. NB-IoT and LTE-M were tied to LTE; they continue to work in NSA architectures and where LTE is preserved, but they cannot be deployed on a pure 5G SA carrier.
