Radio Network Temporary Identifiers allow the gNB scheduler to address individual UEs and identify different transmission types on the 5G NR air interface. Each RNTI is embedded in the CRC field of the Downlink Control Information carried on the PDCCH. A UE monitors the PDCCH by attempting to decode DCI candidates using its assigned RNTI values and only processes a message when the CRC check passes. This elegant mechanism lets multiple UEs share the same search space while each responds only to its own scheduling grants, system information broadcasts, or paging notifications.
