5G Fundamentals
Dynamic Spectrum Sharing allows LTE and 5G NR to operate on the same frequency carrier simultaneously, with the base station dynamically allocating resource elements between the two technologies each subframe based on real-time traffic demand. DSS leverages MBSFN subframes originally designed for LTE broadcast and employs NR rate-matching around LTE Cell-specific Reference Signals so that NR transmissions avoid colliding with legacy reference symbols. This approach lets operators light up 5G coverage instantly across their existing LTE footprint without dedicating or refarming any spectrum.
Try these first, even if you're not sure. Guessing primes your brain.
An operator lights up 5G nationwide overnight by reusing existing 4G frequencies. What should you suspect?
Why is sharing one carrier between 4G and 5G technically hard?
As LTE traffic fades on a shared carrier, what is the long-term fate?
