Sharing Infrastructure Between 4G and 5G
Most 5G deployments add NR equipment to existing 4G sites rather than building new locations. Co-site deployment shares the tower or rooftop structure, equipment shelter, power supply, and transport backhaul. The 5G AAUs are mounted alongside existing LTE antennas with proper inter-system isolation (typically 30 cm vertical separation). Shared backhaul aggregates both 4G and 5G traffic on the same transport link — existing 10G fiber may need upgrading to 25G or 100G to accommodate the additional 5G fronthaul and backhaul bandwidth.
