Integrating MEC with 5G requires a local UPF deployed at the MEC site to intercept and redirect user traffic to edge applications. The SMF provisions the local UPF through the N4 interface, installing Packet Detection Rules that match traffic destined for MEC applications based on destination IP, port, or application identifier. Matched packets are forwarded locally to MEC application servers through the N6 interface instead of traveling to the central UPF.
