SSB Beam Sweeping Fundamentals
Millimeter wave systems rely on narrow directional beams to overcome severe path loss, fundamentally changing how devices discover and connect to cells. The gNodeB transmits Synchronization Signal Blocks across multiple beam directions in a sweeping pattern. At mmWave, a cell may use sixty-four SSB beams to cover its sector, each pointing in a slightly different direction. The device measures received signal strength on each beam during the sweep and reports the best beam index to the network.
