Sub-THz and THz spectrum (100 GHz-1 THz): propagation challenges
The Terahertz Opportunity
The sub-THz (100-300 GHz) and THz (300 GHz-1 THz) bands offer enormous contiguous bandwidths — tens of GHz in a single channel — enabling peak data rates approaching 1 Tbps. The D-band (110-170 GHz) and H-band (220-325 GHz) are primary candidates for 6G ultra-high-capacity links. These frequencies support channel bandwidths of 5-20 GHz compared to 400 MHz maximum in FR2 (mmWave). Research demonstrations have achieved 100+ Gbps links over short distances. WRC-27 is expected to address THz spectrum identification for IMT services.
