ITU IMT-2030 framework: 6 usage scenarios

From IMT-2020 to IMT-2030

ITU-R Recommendation M.2160 defines the IMT-2030 framework as the successor to IMT-2020 (5G). While IMT-2020 defined three usage scenarios (eMBB, URLLC, mMTC), IMT-2030 expands to six scenarios reflecting the broader role of 6G. The three original scenarios evolve into enhanced forms, and three entirely new scenarios are introduced to capture capabilities beyond pure communication — sensing, AI integration, and ubiquitous connectivity. This framework guides global 6G research and will anchor 3GPP standardization beginning with Release 20 study items.
