Why 6G — limitations of 5G and future demands (2030+)
5G Capability Gaps
Despite 5G delivering massive improvements over 4G, its architecture was not designed for the demands expected beyond 2030. Peak data rates of 20 Gbps and 1 ms latency fall short of holographic telepresence requiring Tbps throughput and sub-0.1 ms response. 5G URLLC achieves 99.999% reliability but cannot simultaneously guarantee extreme capacity and ultra-low latency. Energy efficiency targets are insufficient for a projected trillion-device IoT ecosystem, and 5G lacks native support for integrated sensing, AI-driven autonomy, and joint compute-communication services.
