How a UE finds a 5G cell (cell search)
Powering On Into the Unknown
When a UE powers on or enters an unfamiliar area, it has no knowledge of the surrounding radio environment and must discover a 5G cell from scratch. Cell search is the structured multi-step procedure that takes the UE from a completely blind state to a fully connected RRC session. The process begins with detecting the synchronization signal block to acquire basic timing, then progressively decodes broadcast information to learn the cell's configuration, and finally performs random access to establish a bidirectional link with the gNB.
