Massive MIMO: from 4x4 to 64T64R
The Antenna Revolution
MIMO technology uses multiple antennas at both transmitter and receiver to multiply capacity and extend coverage without additional spectrum. LTE deployments typically used two-by-two or four-by-four configurations, with eight-by-eight appearing in advanced setups. 5G NR takes antenna counts to an entirely different scale. Mid-band deployments routinely use 32T32R or 64T64R panels as the standard configuration. A typical 64T64R panel contains 192 physical antenna elements arranged in a 12-column by 8-row grid with dual polarization, all mapped to 64 logical transceiver ports.
