N2 (inter-AMF) Handover — full call flow
Handover with AMF Change
N2 handover is needed when the target gNB is served by a different AMF or when no direct Xn interface exists between the source and target gNBs. The signaling routes through the core network: source gNB sends Handover Required via N2 to the source AMF, which forwards it to the target AMF, which then coordinates with the target gNB. This is more complex than Xn because the AMF context including NAS security, subscription data, and PDU session information must be transferred between AMFs.
