PDU Session Modification and Release

Changing and Ending Sessions

Active PDU sessions can be modified or released as service requirements change. Modification adds or removes QoS flows, adjusts QoS parameters, or updates UPF forwarding rules. It can be triggered by the UE requesting new QoS, the PCF pushing a policy change, or the SMF detecting a condition that requires adjustment. Release terminates the session entirely, cleaning up all associated resources. Release can be UE-initiated when data is no longer needed, network-initiated when the operator intervenes, or triggered by the AMF during deregistration.
