A PDU Session is the logical connection between the UE and the data network, and 5G supports five types to accommodate diverse use cases. IPv4 provides traditional internet access with a single IPv4 address allocated by the SMF. IPv6 provides a /64 prefix for future-proof connectivity. IPv4v6 provides dual-stack with both an IPv4 address and IPv6 prefix. Unlike 4G which only supported IP-based sessions, 5G adds two non-IP types for industrial and IoT applications that fundamentally change what the mobile network can transport.
